Vehicle Overview
The 1999 Lamborghini Diablo?SV is a quintessential example of late-1990s supercar excess: mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, naturally aspirated V12, and a rawness to its character rarely found in modern vehicles. In many ways it represents the last of its kind before supercars began their gradual shift toward electronics-heavy, turbocharged, all-wheel-drive machines. On the outside, the 1999 Diablo SV carries the dramatic proportions that have become synonymous with the Lamborghini name. The long, low silhouette, wide rear haunches, prominent side intakes ahead of the wheels, and a large rear wing give it an unmistakable presence.
For the 1999 model year the Diablo line was facelifted: among the most obvious changes was the replacement of the original pop-up headlamps with fixed composite lenses - which cleaned up the nose and improved aerodynamics. The bodywork remains quintessential Lamborghini in its aggression: large air vents and a stance that suggests instability at rest but thrills in motion.
Inside, the 1999 update brought a completely redesigned dashboard: gone was the separate binnacle hood and instead a sweeping dash that housed new instrumentation. The interior materials reflect the era: Alcantara, minimal driver-aids, and a true analogue feel to the driving environment.
Under the rear cover sits a naturally aspirated 5.7-litre V12 engine, rear-mid mounted and driving the rear wheels only. In the 1999 SV this engine was enhanced with variable-valve timing on the inlet cams (an innovation for Lamborghini in that era) and bumped output to around 530?Horsepower and 605?Nm (˜?446?lb-ft) of torque. The gearbox is a 5-speed manual, further emphasizing the analogue driving experience. Performance figures are dramatic: 0-100?km/h (˜?0-62?mph) around 3.8?seconds, and a theoretical top speed of roughly 320?km/h (˜?199?mph) or slightly more depending on conditions.
The chassis remains pure: rear-wheel drive, no modern traction control systems (beyond ABS introduced in this facelift), and all the unpredictability that comes with a powerful, high-revving V12 strapped into a steel/fibre mixed space-frame.
The 1999 Diablo?SV occupies a special place in Lamborghini's history. It effectively became the "entry" Diablo in that model year after Lamborghini simplified its lineup, yet it carried many performance upgrades and a degree of exclusivity. Production numbers are low: only roughly 80 built for the SV variant of that era and 25 coming to the US. For collectors, the appeal lies in several factors: natural-aspiration V12, manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive, limited production, and the fact that it is one of the last truly analogue supercars before the dawn of electronics-heavy hypercars. From a styling standpoint it bridges the flamboyant 1990s supercar aesthetic and the more refined era to come.
Our example here was originally delivered to Pennsylvania and had an extensive restoration completed by the famous restoration shop Bobilef in San Diego, California only a few years ago along with a major service. The car now resides in immaculate condition, covering just over 22k miles since new!
